The 6 Most Common Causes of Plumbing Clogs

Plumbing issues are a common headache for both homeowners and businesses. One of the primary reasons our clients call us at Mouradian Plumbing & Heating is due to clogs that disrupt daily life and, if not addressed promptly, can lead to more severe plumbing problems. Understanding the most common causes of these clogs can help prevent them and maintain the health of your plumbing system.

  1. Fats, Oils, and Grease. One of the biggest enemies of kitchen plumbing is the improper disposal of fats, oils, and grease. Despite seeming harmless and liquid at the time of disposal, these substances solidify inside pipes, attracting and trapping other waste, which can eventually lead to significant clogs. Instead of pouring these materials down the sink, dispose of them in the trash after they’ve cooled.

  2. Soap Scum and Mineral Buildup. Mineral buildup in pipes is a common issue that can restrict water flow and cause blockages. Additionally, the traditional bar soaps many people use contribute to soap scum buildup, exacerbating clogging problems. Switching to liquid soaps and installing a water softener can significantly reduce these risks.

  3. Hair and Foreign Objects. Bathrooms frequently face clogs due to hair binding with soap scum and other debris in pipes. Installing drain guards can catch hair before it causes a blockage. Moreover, toilets often get clogged due to the flushing of objects that have no business being disposed of in this manner, such as feminine hygiene products, “flushable” wipes (which often aren’t), and various other non-dissolvable items.

  4. Food Waste. Even homes equipped with garbage disposals need to be cautious about what goes down the kitchen sink. Food scraps, especially those that are fibrous or starchy (like vegetable peels, pasta, and rice), can clog the drain. Additionally, coffee grounds and eggshells are notorious for causing plumbing issues and should be disposed of in the trash or compost.

  5. Tree Roots. For homes with older plumbing systems or those near significant tree growth, invasive roots can be a hidden menace. Tiny cracks or leaks in outdoor plumbing lines can invite tree roots inside, seeking moisture. These roots can cause severe damage and clogs, requiring professional intervention to resolve.

  6. Hard Water. Hard water is not just a nuisance for your skin and appliances; it can also diminish the efficiency of your plumbing. The minerals in hard water build up over time, narrowing the pipes and leading to clogs. While installing a water softener is an effective solution, regular maintenance like descaling can also mitigate the issue.

Preventive measures can go a long way in avoiding such problems, but when you find yourself facing a stubborn or recurrent clog, you can count on our team at Mouradian Plumbing & Heating to respond quickly and restore your drains’ functionality.
